Stickered laptops and posters on your bedroom wall
Posted: January 30th, 2010 | Author: Vikki Chowney | Filed under: Right Here | 13 Comments »This is the third time I’ve sat down to write this post. Annoyingly, my blog has started to not save things after I’ve spent hours (well…) writing. C’est la vie.
I asked a group of my friends last week to get involved with a theory I’d been working on. For some time, I’ve been drawing dotted lines between the business of plastering your bedroom walls with posters, and decorating the top of your laptop with stickers. It’s wholly possible that the motivation is the same, but that doesn’t mean I”m right.
In fact, the people that responded to my question proved a whole other theory. As it turns out, the ‘bloggers’ among them did indeed plaster their laptop cases to high heaven. Nude laptop theory was rife, causing some unrest within the group – but leaving your MBP to its own super-shiny devices is no bad thing. Actually, the people that tended not to decorate externally, personalised their desktops instead. The notion of keeping things tidy and in the right place seemed to be a much bigger issue for most, and it was certainly the most argued point – far more than stickers.
I don’t know whether this is because those that make a living by being naturally exuberant are more inclined to wear badges of honour, or something else. But those that straddled both the stickers and the desktop categories had roles/jobs that seemed to do the same for the most part. It’s made for an interesting experiment to say the least.
Rupert Howe‘s super-cute desktop
Terence Eden‘s laptop
Alfie Dennen‘s desktop
Kalam Ali‘s laptop
Kai Turner‘s desktop
James Whatley‘s laptop
Daren Forsyth‘s laptop
Phil Campbell‘s laptop
Louise Campbell‘s desktop (and gorgeous Snow White-stickered laptop above)

Interesting rabbit trail theory there. As a self check…I do blog, and I do have stickers all over my laptop, tho certainly not as many as sir @whatleydude. My desktop, however, only has 2 icons on it, everything else in the task bar (I run Windows 7) or where it should be…in the menu
The Snow White sticker is awesome.
I don’t know what it says about me, but I am stickerless and wallpaperless, and even remove the Intel,Nvidia stickers that come on new laptops. Come to think of it, I also have no photos or pictures on my walls at home. hmmm, ok it means I have no personality.
Heh. My laptop has Pacman stickers on it. Which you can see a little bit here:

Complete strangers now start talking to me about video games in cafes.
@matt That pretty much fits in with the general consensus. The stickers are representative of your big, extrovert personality (said with massive love) – whereas the need to organise seems to be how creative tech people like to work.
@Tim Bless you, that doesn’t mean you have no personality! Maybe you express yourself via another channel
@Siany OOH OOH! The same vinyl sticker company makes retro game stickers for walls as well, and we’re going to put Asteroids and Tetris in our study! Love it!
That Snow White sticker is absolutely great!
Inspired.
I want to get one for someone I know with a White MacBook.
Where, oh where do I get one?
I have stickers on one laptop, yet none on another.
One’s more personal – one’s more businesslike. But I express myself more on the desktop.
great post vc!
Hmm. Some of you *may* notice that the laptop pictured isn’t quite working anymore… ahem.
Since going mac I’ve kept it clean and naked. Considering stickers now though. @Documentally has an awesome cover. If I get that, I can put stickers on that.
Done.
2 things that have stopped me stickering my MBP or the powerbook before it:
1) the beautiful anodised aluminium case with the pretty glowing Apple in the middle. how can i mess with that? i would have been happy to sticker up any of my Toshiba or Sony or Dell PC laptops if they hadn’t been company property. Phil’s stickering is epic, but looks much better because of the red case… would love to know where he got that done.
2) i never get given geeky stickers. maybe i don’t go to enough geek events, or maybe i just don’t notice stickers when i do. the only stickers I ever come across are my 4 year old daughter’s, and I’d look a bit silly using them. Although that Snow White sticker is the best sticker *ever*, and also deals neatly with point number 1)
Puts my one Ghostbuster sticker on my MBP to shame
I really don’t get the stickers on laptops thing, especially not on pristine Macs, but maybe I’m just old

Most of the good ones come from infectious.com, I think — although I’m sure there are other sources.

ps. what’s MBP – a 90s dance act?
Thanks for all the comments guys
@Rupert – I think Phil did that with Moo stickers himself.
@Julie – You definitely win!
