All change!
Posted: June 30th, 2009 | Author: Vikki Chowney | Filed under: Right Here | 12 Comments »I’ve been lucky enough over the past few years to work with some great people and great clients. My journey through fashion illustration to technology, digital media and blogging has been challenging as well as stimulating in equal measure.
Both Six Degrees and my previous employers have remained fully supportive of my personal ambitions throughout, which is not only extremely encouraging, but a rare thing in this climate.
With that in mind, I’m going to be changing my working arrangements from July 1st. Starting today, I’ll be working as a freelance writer and consultant, focusing predominately on blogging and journalism.
Over the past 12 months, it’s become clear to all those that know me (and probably some that don’t!) that this is where my heart lies, rather than PR.
However, I’m keen to maintain some connection with Six Degrees throughout the transition and the team remains my first recommendation to anyone looking for technology PR support. I’ll still be in the office regularly and will maintain my work email address, as well as input into my accounts.
I will be actively pursuing writing projects and am currently looking around for new challenges to sink my teeth into. My inner mobile geek will be placated via the work I do for The Really Mobile Project, and VikkiChowney.com will become the place that I write about Social Change from a tech perspective.
If there’s something you think I can help you with, or just want to talk more about an idea, please get in touch via vikki@vikkichowney.com or give me call on +44 (0) 7868 115235

this is awesome, best of luck with it all, taking that leap from full time employment to freelance writer is MASSIVE, serious respect for initiating that change, i’ll know where to come if i stumble across any tips
Good luck. It can be tricky trying to be a journalist and PR consultant at the same time – the objectivity you require as the former does militate against the pro-client bias you’re required to take in PR. But good luck – and if you ever need to pick my brains on pitching or for contacts, feel free to get in touch.
Good luck Vikki. Know you will be a success at whatever you do…
Vikki – Good luck – I joined the Dark Side in 1997 and now I wish I’d become a Jedi Knight like my father.
Anyway hope everything works out – spidernix
best of luck Vikki – hopefully work with you soon
– and let me know if you need any recommendations
Thanks Guy. My role as a PR is actually being phased out slowly and the long term goal is to focus solely on writing. However, I’m big on looking after my clients and will be staying in a much reduced capacity to hand things over properly over time.
Thanks everyone, like I’ve said to a few of you already – I’m excited and apprehensive in equal measure
Good luck Vicki, been a fan of your writing for some time now, looking forward to more of it.
Sounds like a sensible way forward for you and SixDegrees, the way they have supported you and I guess still are shows SixDegreesPR are a top crew to work for. Brave step but where would the work be without them. Actually brave steps look a lot braver to those not making them. When you are following what you want to do then it’s just the right thing to do, the next step. I shall follow your career with interest. If you ever fancy presenting a tech slot on five minute lifestyle I’m sure we could find you a slot.
Kill ‘em all
Good Luck with the Career change!
I’ve done it and it’s scary but rewarding. You’re lucky to have such an understanding employer.
